Radyne Corp. Ships Ammunition Hardening System
[March 1, 2010] Milwaukee, WI - Radyne Corp., an Inductotherm Group company, delivered a rebuilt system for hardening ammunition shells to the US military.
This induction system features a six-position automatic dial indexer, which through hardens the tip of 30mm steel projectiles at a nominal rate of 480 parts per hour. This hardening process uses a Radyne 80kW, 25kHz induction power converter.
The six-position automatic dial indexer features the following stations:
Station 1 - Pneumatic driver loader (loads parts vertically with cup down)
Station 2 - Pneumatic part locator and check
Station 3 - Four coils in a servo-lifted nitrogen atmosphere
Station 4 - Water quench
Station 5 - Air dry
Station 6 - Automatic unload
The ammunition hardening system also contains PLC controls with an HMI interface and Radyne QAS process monitoring, all of which ensure superior process control and monitoring, delivering the highest part quality and system repeatability. For system cooling and part quenching, an integrated closed-loop water recirculation system was also included.
This installation compliments a previous system Radyne delivered over 15 years ago that processes specialized munitions at a US Navy facility.
"We are honored to serve our nation's military and to provide equipment that helps give our soldiers a tactical advantage on the battlefield," said Justin Mortimer, President of Radyne Corp.
Radyne Corp., the industry leader for high frequency (HF) induction applications, builds systems for brazing and soldering, heat treating, curing, wire heating, coating, crystal growing, bonding and getter flashing.
